Musings - Bank Holiday Sun...

The sun shone this Bank Holiday weekend.

To some that might seem like an ordinary thing, to have the clouds part and the blue of cornflowers light the sky with optimism.

I come from Yorkshire, this is akin to a mini miracle. And I mention optimism with a ring of truth to it because it does make you feel hopeful. There is nothing like the warmth of the Orb beating down, warming the silk of your hair and the once defeated arch of your spine… there is nothing like that jolt of vitamin on the breeze to make you feel you can reconquer the world.

Or the garden.

Which is what we did… realising three hours later that weeds were in fact our only flora. Garden looking a bit bare, Love?

Oh well at least it’s a great deal tidier. :) xx

Musings - The things kids say...

This week Katharine has been all about playing with her peeps. She sets out the village, has a chat with the vicar and manoeuvres the apples in the back of the cart.

I caught her also playing with her hair bobbles and said 'Aw are you doing you peeps hair?'

To which she replied, like I was a complete idiot, 'No Mummy, Scarves!'.

Okay, so I see it now. :) xx

Holiday - Day 7: Warkworth Castle and Oreo Ice Cream

As the sun decided to keep shining today we headed off for a little English Heritage. Northumberland is littered with Castles and so we thought for the last day what would be better than to walk the ruins.

We bypassed Alnwick for Warkworth Castle. The original home of the Percy family who debunked to Alnwick in their later generations.

Even though a lot of this castle is made up of crumbled walls and greener than green grassy areas you could still get a feel of what it would have been like to ride up to the gates on your stead and wait to be permitted entrance. The tower and the architecture in general took you back, made you long for the pride and glory of simpler times.

After the castle we moved on Amble for a spot of Harbour lunch and an Oreo Cookie Ice Cream from a specialist Dairy Farm. How can you not love a farm shop that sells only ice cream and has photographs of their cows on the walls... Like I said above, pride and glory ha ha.

It feels sad that this is our final day, there is just no appeal to go home... Maybe if I lived in a Castle... :) xx

Holiday - Day 3: Berwick weather not permitting...

The sun has taken a day off. We are Yorkies, we don't mind the cold but when you are trying to look around a holiday town filled with shops and the fine rain just will not let up... It makes you miserable.

We did manage to find a restaurant that allowed Rohan in and the decor was warm and friendly which was what we were longing for. But when the bill was over £50 for sandwiches, scones and coffee we almost wished we had eaten fish and chips in the car.

We headed back to our beautiful house where we played games and giggles with Katharine who loved having everyone's attention.

Rohan loved it too, much better than cold paws on cold cobbles.

Tomorrow we pray for a return of the sun but the weather forecast doesn't look too promising. :) xx

Photo - Sleepyheads...

I got up, popped in the shower and returned to find this...

And of course I couldn't resist snapping the scene and sticking it on blogging land for all to see. :) xx

Musings - Sunday in Stafford...

Sunday we visited the in laws and has a wonderful time in the garden. Katharine wheeled around the doll...

She contemplated the baby wood pigeons...

And shared a private joke with her cousin Ewan...

Good times. :) xx

Photo - Big Blue Frog...

Our Friday outing was to the Big Blue Frog play centre...

Katharine and Daddy (who surprised us by having a day off) lived in the ball pool.

We will definitely be going there again. :) xx

Photo - Still shining...

It is very rare in West Yorkshire to have a full week of sun! Therefore today we have taken advantage of the weather once more and taken a picnic to the park.

Katharine LOVED the swings.

Auntie Noisy loved the climbing frame ha ha. :) x

Musings - Beaching it...

Today we have taken a trip to the east coast. Bridlington is a lovely seaside town, one of the quaint places that still have teddy grabbing machines and hour long boat trips around the bay.

We all had a great time, though I got sunburnt.

Sometimes I feel very lazy when I think that the beach is less than a two hour drive yet we never go.

We will have to make more of an effort to go, doesn't that seem to be my mantra these days? ;) xx

Photo - Gereing up...

You may have noticed my spelling mistake in the title above... It's intentional!

You see, today in the post, Richard arrived in his glorious white suit. Richard Gere that is (get it) and the film being An Officer and a Gentleman.

My friend had never seen it, and despite us believing otherwise, neither me nor my Mother owned it. So I bought it. For £3.65.

I can't wait to watch it! The eighties had the best films. :) xx

Photo - Disney...

This photograph is of a bag from the Disney store...

Inside it hides a stuffed dog of the Lady and the Tramp variety just waiting to jump out.

You see, on Friday, my baby turns one!!!! And as she loves both dogs and Disney we thought it only fitting that this bag should be nestled amongst all her other gifts.

I can't wait to see her face... :) xx

Musings - Mama Kat's Workshop (8th March 2012)

This week Mama Kat has given me the perfect prompt.

Since having Katharine and since meeting an extremely inspiring individual who has refused to let cancer beat him, I have thought more and more about what is important to me. So this week's prompt put a smile on my face and made it so easy for me to take some time and complete it.

THE PROMPT: On The Bachelor a rose is given to the women he could really see himself spending the rest of his life with. What six things in your life would you like to give a rose to and why?

And my six...
My Baby - Because she is my life. :)

My Man - Because he is my monster. :)

My Pooch - Because she is my furry hot water bottle. :)

My folks - Because they made me who I am. :)

My BFF - Because she listens and laughs in all the right places. :)

And my books - Because, let's face it, they are my first love ha ha. :)

So what would be your six?
Who read this and, with raised eyebrow,
realised their spouse would not make the list above chocolate? :) xx

Musings - Mama Kat's Workshop (24th November 2011)

THANKSGIVING.

This week all the prompts at Mama Kat's Writing Workshop are about Thanksgiving. I'm British. My entire knowledge of Thanksgiving is from watching it in the movies.

Family members get together, even though they don't want to, in order to eat stupid amounts of food, saying what they are thankful for, before an argument breaks out and everyone storms off home in the bad weather... surely that's just Christmas? Or every Sunday family meal?

Trust you Americans to get in another celebration! :) But fair play to you, I think it's great to think about what we are thankful for.

So even though I am a Brit I am going to join in... I am drinking coffee and stuffing myself with toast as I type, so I am trying to get into the spirit of things and here is what I am thankful for this year.

* My wonderful family
* My new daughter
* My Virgin Media TV package :)
* My health (though I could be healthier)
*My Amazon iPhone app for buying all my books
and...
* Mama Kat's workshop for inspiring me. :)

I hope I did that right? I am a beginner afterall.

So to all you thanks givers out there...

HAPPY HOLIDAYS

Musings - Mama Kat's Workshop (22nd September 2011)

Writing as part of Mama Kat's Writing Workshop

WHERE I’M FROM

I am from Sunday bus rides to my Grandparents house in Sunday best with boredom Sunday smiles, from factor 50 sun cream yet still I burned and stationery fetishes for pencils, pens and the like.

I am from the street that Nelson named, from red brick warmth and sparkling window panes. From my very own stripy room filled with books, dreams and the luscious Ethan Hawke pinned in place. The sound of laughter, the smell of cake, the sight of family and the taste of melted chocolate and home made bubbling fudge.

I am from the purple clustered heather, the Bronte wilderness of rolling moors harsh with barren beauty, blustery with high up winds, untidy hair, pink cheeks.

I am from Christmas Eve presents tauntingly laying under the tree and finding strength in laughter even when hearts do break, from Lorna but not the one of the Doones and the Carters of the Village and the Rhodes’ of the Den.

I am from blurred vision, pathetic eyes yet pretty spectacles. From size six feet from the women on my mother’s side and their love of shoes which clashes with the thriftiness of the men on my father’s side.

From reaching for dreams, aspiring to be something better than I am and not eating too much raw cake mix when I am licking the chocolate covered spoon.

I am from Henry’s Church, formed of England whether right or wrong. Lapse, undecided, guilty, longing for that peace but unwilling to mix faith with the restrictions of religion and the damage caused in its name. I am from a belief in Angels, choosing them as my guidance and living life as Gabriel would want.

I’m from a lineage of Yorkies, the White Rose being the flower of my birth, from a long line of Fredericks and an ancestry that is something I have yet to discover beyond my father’s father’s father. I am from mince pies at Christmas made every year without fail and Maltesers and Toblerone and arctic roll.

From the Uncle who when sitting in his pram with sweets was accosted by the farm yard pig who took a fancy, grabbed a little arm and took off as fast as little trotters and wheels would allow, no long term damage though other than the story frequently told, and the Grandfather of the Village who grow in his allotment, who was quiet and brusque and who met me but I not him.

I am from suitcases stored and filled with albums stuffed with photos, walls covered and surfaces littered with frames and treasures. Souvenirs from visits, vacations and occasions tell the story of this is me, this is us, that was them. Life, lives that have been lived documented, told through smiling fuzzy random snaps, Snaps so precious as they hold time at a stand still while its parallel charges forward evolving history into anecdotes and sighs.

I am from love, laughter and longing. :) xx

Snippet - Away game...

Recently I have been blogging on the go, usually from the master bedroom while I am straightening my hair or from the nursery while Katharine necks a pint of milk.

I am in training.

At the end of September we are heading out on holiday. The Isle of Anglesey is to be our destination, for those of you who are not sure where that is let's just say that this is the home of Prince William and his new bride. :) Anyway, we are going for a week which means that the amount of stuff we are going to have to take for a family of three plus a furry one is going to fill the car to the brim.

Which means that somethings are going to be left behind, no not the husband, ha ha... my laptop. There isn't even going to be room for Netty the pink Netbook. So I have taken it upon myself to practice with the alternative option... my iPhone.

So over the next couple of weeks if my spelling is off, the justification just not quite right and the photos a little unpolished remember I am somewhere on the curve of learning and will be perfect in time.

:) xx

Photo - Talking about my generation(s)...

I love the fact that we have 4 generations of women in my family.
I would like you to meet them all...

Lorna Beatrice (my Mum), Edith Alice (my Gran),
Katharine Lorelai (my Daughter) and of Stacy Leanne me.
I would like to point out that the three of us did not plan to match colour wise
it was just a great coincidence. :) xx

Musings - Gardens are scary

I love going to garden centres, it's the geek in me, though I never look at the plants. I go for everything else, the gifts, the coffee shop, the books (our garden centre is ace!) and so on.

The other weekend we went to visit the out-laws, I mean in-laws ha ha, and took a drive out to their local garden centre. A family member owns an old fashioned sweet shop there so we got to visit and have a wander around. This garden centre is huge, even has a pet shop. It is so huge in fact that the garden  ornaments it has for sale reflect that. This is one if them...

It scared the living daylights out of me! Then I felt foolish... but still! What sort of person would have this in their garden? Someone who would need to remortgage judging by the price of it.

In my garden there used to be a bird on a stick but its wings fell off... poor thing, it was either that or get strangled by the weeds. :) xx

Snippet - Oh We do like to be...

On July the 22nd we all took a trip to the east coast, Whitby. It is an old fashioned port town with narrow cobbled streets and a Fish & Chip shop in every third shop on the main street. The day started with a VERY heavy down pour but then it brightened up and I was able to take this photograph...

Beautiful.

There is something about the coast of Great Britain that has a timeless quality, Piers still decorated like the 1950s and oceans that have blasted shores for an eternity long before us and no doubt for a long time after we have gone.

It's humbling... and the chips weren't bad either. :) xx
